Prof. Dr. Katharina Eggensperger has been a Professor of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence at the Lamarr Institute at TU Dortmund since the winter semester 2025/26. Previously, from 2023 to 2025, she led the research group “AutoML for Science” in the Cluster of Excellence Machine Learning for Science at the University of Tübingen.

Her research focuses on automated machine learning (AutoML), with a particular emphasis on systems and hyperparameter optimization. As part of her inaugural lecture, Katharina Eggensperger will discuss her research in (automated) machine learning, focusing on her core interests in foundation models, benchmarking, and tabular data. Specifically, she will discuss the relation between understanding models and evaluating them empirically, and how this shapes the role of AutoML.
