Description

OWN Your Code – IP Strategies and Exploitation Pathways for Research Software

This workshop aims to showcase the full range of exploitation pathways for research software, many of which go well beyond classical technology transfer. Because software can be rapidly turned into a start-up or licensing deal, but is equally easy to replicate, a well-considered IP strategy is the decisive lever for securing and monetising your innovation.

In three focused sessions, researchers and technology transfer experts will walk through concrete exploitation pathways:

  • Patenting & Licensing – when and how software qualifies for patent protection, illustrated by real deep-tech examples
  • Trade Secrets & Trademarks – protecting software through confidentiality and brand strategy, with insights from active start-ups
  • Open Source – leveraging openness as a strategic tool, with a spin-off case study

Some pathways will be introduced by researchers and founders who have navigated it themselves, sharing first-hand experience on what works – and what doesn't.

The workshop takes place HYBRID on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, 13:30–16:00 on Zoom and at Poppelsdorfer Campus, B-IT 3.110/111, and is open to all Lamarr researchers.
